A Digest Of Divine Law For The Modern Christian
This book of 248 pages is a compilation and discussion of the moral laws of the Bible, and was written by the late Dr. Howard B. Rand, LL.B., a longtime member of the Massachusetts and Maine bar associations. The author tells us that this is a book "that will clear inform you about the Divine Laws, the Law of the Lord, the Commandments, Statutes and Judgments whose scope covers every phase of human conduct and all national requirements fo governmental administration. While the Ten Commandments are universally accepted as the highest moral code, there are other God-given laws which define true standards of wealth, monetary regulations, taxation, interest, debt and all other aspects of the moral, social and economic life of the individual, family and nation. We are bound by these laws just as surely as we are bound by the Ten Commandments."
This is a very important point! Many Christians pick and choose what part of God's Word to obey, but Scripture says that not one jot or tittle will be removed (Matt. 5:18). In other words, every single moral precept is important for our Christian walk today, not as some form of a test to just follow legalistically but as a matter of the heart (Matthew 15:8; 22:37; etc.). Truly God's Law is a much misunderstood and neglected subject in Christendom today.
The author continues, "From the internal evidence in the Scriptures, it is shown that the Divine laws have never been abrogated. Law-abiding Christians, Bible teachers, and every student of political economy, should read and study the whole body of the laws of God given in the Scriptures, for while they are frequently mentioned, their application is usually misunderstood. Digest of the Divine Law points out the fact that we face the rule of law or chaos. It sets forth the justice, equity and righteousness of the Law of the Lord, which is destined to become the law of our land. When the entire range of Divine jurisprudence is comprehended, and its precepts are obeyed, individual properity and national well-being will be the beneficient result."
Subjects included in this book include military training, war, vacations, interest/usury, lending, imprisonment, restoration, capital punishment, labor relations, qualifications for office-holders, government structure and scope, stealing, penalty for adultery, prohibited foods, sanitation, accidental death, private ownership, property rights, taxes, war conscription, military service exemption, court procedures, monetary standard of value, slavery, tax exemptions, government revenue, national resources, legislative enactments, indebtedness, kidnapping, and injury compensation.
Dr. Rand was eminently qualified to write on this subject, a topic in a field he worked and that spanned a long career. He was also a brilliant thinker who received several scientific patents. You will truly enjoy this very readable explanation of how Divine law applies in our modern world. First published in 1942 and reprinted many times since. Dr. Rand passed away at the age of 102 years in the early 1980's.
